Recommended Resume Layout

Your resume should be an effective tool in obtaining your next position. To maximize your results we suggest the following:

  • Type your resume in MS Word format

  • Use adequate margins (at least ½")

  • Do not use fancy text (use Arial font, 10pt minimum)

  • Use 8 1/2 x11 white paper and black ink

  • Use a laser printer instead of dot matrix

  • Avoid boxes or complicated configurations such as columns

  • Resumes need not be restricted to 1 page if sufficient experience warrants it

Resume Do's

  • Your resume should be clear, concise and reader friendly

  • Begin with a summary of your professional and/or technical skills

  • List your experience and associated achievements in chronological order - your current job first

  • List all degrees with completion dates

  • Begin your sentences with verbs (e.g., managed, improved, supervised, etc.)

  • Include but minimize experience beyond 10 years

  • List all current certifications and/or additional specialized training

  • Quantify achievements and results wherever possible (be prepared to substantiate everything)

  • Spell check/proofread

Resume Don'ts

  • Don't include an objective

  • Do not underline and/or italicize words

  • Don't refer to yourself in the first or third person

  • Don't include personal information such as date of birth, Social Security number, marital status, family information

  • Don't use your photograph

  • Don't exaggerate or misrepresent your experience

  • Don't use complicated formatting

Resume Style

Chronological: This style lists employers and job history in reverse chronological order (most current position first). The chronological resume style is considered the industry norm.
