Resume Preparation
Recommended Resume Layout
Your resume should be an effective tool in obtaining your next position. To maximize your results we suggest the following:

Type your resume in MS Word format

Use adequate margins (at least ½”)

Do not use fancy text (use Arial font, 10pt minimum)

Use 8 1/2 x11 white paper and black ink
-
Use a laser printer instead of dot matrix
-
Avoid boxes or complicated configurations such as columns
-
Resumes need not be restricted to 1 page if sufficient experience warrants it
Resume Do’s

Your resume should be clear, concise and reader friendly
-
Begin with a summary of your professional and/or technical skills
-
List your experience and associated achievements in chronological order – your current job first
-
List all degrees with completion dates
-
Begin your sentences with verbs (e.g., managed, improved, supervised, etc.)
-
Include but minimize experience beyond 10 years
-
List all current certifications and/or additional specialized training
-
Quantify achievements and results wherever possible (be prepared to substantiate everything)

Spell check/proofread
Resume Don’ts

Don’t include an objective
-
Do not underline and/or italicize words
-
Don’t refer to yourself in the first or third person
-
Don’t include personal information such as date of birth, Social Security number, marital status, family information

Don’t use your photograph
-
Don’t exaggerate or misrepresent your experience

Don’t use complicated formatting
Resume Style
Chronological: This style lists employers and job history in reverse chronological order (most current position first). The chronological resume style is considered the industry norm.
