Overview:
We have been retained to assist our client in a top-priority, mission-critical search for a highly talented, senior level R&D manager to lead all RF product development teams and programs through the entire product development process, from conceptualization to successful release into the marketplace. The Senior R&D Director for RF Products is a newly-created position with very high visibility up to the CEO and CTO of the company. This pivotal position reports to the Vice President – R&D of one of their most successful business units.
Scope:
This individual will manage and coordinate RF product development activities across two R&D sites: TX and CA. The focus will be on hardware and firmware development for the RF T&M product platform. Each site has a Group Manager-R&D, overseeing the day to day RF product development activities of their respective engineering teams. These two site managers will report to the Senior Director.
As a contributing member of the R&D Management Team, this individual will actively participate in setting the overall direction and strategy of all RF product development initiatives based on a solid understanding of technology trends, the marketplace, the voice of the customer and the engineering capabilities of the product development teams.
This position will provide insight and direction to senior management on strategies for the company as it evolves into a more vertically-integrated, systems approach to the T&M industry while continuing to expand and strengthen its’ market share position in general purpose T&M instrumentation.

Qualifications: |
Required Experience & Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 -20 years of combined experience managing the development of complex, systems level RF products, ideally related to test and measurement. These products should incorporate HW, SW, firmware, DSP, algorithms and electro-mechanical packaging technology.
Experience managing technical managers and their teams in multiple, geographically-dispersed locations; ability to motivate and develop these managers on an individual basis while at the same time fostering collaboration and cooperation as part of the overall R&D team.
Successful track record in new product development with demonstrated achievement guiding the complete product development cycle from concept to product release.
Ability to understand and contribute positively to critical decisions regarding architectural tradeoffs as needed.
Strong fundamental understanding of the RF T&M industry in terms of technology trends, competitive landscape, industry standards (e.g., WiMax, LTE), key supplier roadmaps, underlying market drivers, and major customers within the industry.
Ability to develop and communicate overall strategic directions to R&D management as well as product development teams regarding which technology trends, new product concepts, market drivers and customer input should be the focus for new product development initiatives.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Computer Engineering required; PhD preferred.
Strong understanding of RF test and measurement technology, methodologies and products, as well as competing technologies, target markets and key customers within those markets.
Solid technical foundation in T&M hardware, firmware and software with a track record of collaboration and integration of the initiatives and efforts of other R&D teams within the company, striving towards the development of competitive product platforms.
Track record working with geographically-dispersed, cross-cultural, cross-functional teams: software, mechanical engineering, engineering support services, documentation, manufacturing, sales, marketing.
Experience managing an R&D budget, allocating resources, evaluating ROI vs technical trade-offs, insuring proper investment of time and finances.

Communication: exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with ability to professionally present and defend position on both a business and architectural trade-off issues to both internal and external groups.
